Roads

Griffith City Council is committed to providing safe and practical road solutions for Griffith and district residents.

As the region grows, so do the demands placed on Griffith City's urban and rural transport system. This includes additional cars and increasing numbers of heavy vehicles using our roads.

Griffith City Council constantly strives to maintain, improve and upgrade current roads and plan for an expanding future.

On this page you will find information about some of these initiatives including Griffith road facts, current projects and road maintenance projects.

Road Maintenance

Unsealed Road Maintenance

Griffith City Council maintains 750km of unsealed roads which become potholed and corrugated over time. This deterioration is due to traffic movements and weather conditions, both wet and dry. Maintenance grading is a year round requirement, with Griffith's highly productive harvest occurring all year round with agricultural diversification.  Road conditions are assessed according to their safety and drivability. If they are found to be unsafe for drivers, they are scheduled for maintenance grading. Unsealed road maintenance is performed by grading, watering and compacting the road to bring it up to safe driving standards. Griffith City Council also undertakes approximately 50km of gravel re-sheeting per annum at an annual cost of $1,201,885. Other unsealed road maintenance includes the cleaning of drains, maintenance of culverts and signage.

Sealed Road Maintenance

Griffith City Council maintains 192km of urban sealed roads and 326km of rural sealed roads.

Many of the roads have been constructed for quite some time. This means they are not designed for current levels of traffic, increased loads or increased dimensions of heavy vehicles. Due to this, sealed surfaces are susceptible to potholing and deformation. Griffith City Council regularly inspects these roads for defects and potholes which are repaired as soon as practicable. Sealed surfaces become brittle and require resealing on a regular basis to ensure the gravel pavements underneath are protected from the intrusion of moisture. Annually Griffith City Council reseal bitumen roads to the tune of $1,280,000 which is at approximately $32,000 per kilometre, covering approximately 40km. Deformed pavements are rehabilitated at an approximate cost of $300-$400,000 per kilometre.

Other Road Maintenance

Includes: Drainage, Line-marking, Signage, Vegetation control, Kerb and gutter repair, Street-sweeping, Shoulder maintenance, Footpath maintenance and Street lighting.
