Follow the trail of Italy's heritage

Griffith's Italian Migration Heritage Trail Project was first proposed in 2005, and included a written history of Griffith's Italian forefathers and a chronicle of the many historical items owned by families of those first generations.

The third and final stage saw the release of the Italian Migration Heritage Trail brochure, which chronicles the history of Italian settlers in the area with a pictorial guide and written account of the significance of each feature. It includes sites that have become a part of Griffith's history because of early business ventures, such as Tom's Supermarket and Salon Battaglia, and highlights the history behind some local landmarks, such as Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Yoogali.

The project was started initially to acknowledge the contribution of Griffith's Italian community and the impact of their migration to the area almost a century ago, and the finished product is a comprehensive historical record of Griffith and its humble beginnings.

The finalisation of the project is due to the help received by members of the community, who submitted photos and details of their history, as well as historian Jennifer Cornwall, whose expertise helped complete the project.

Funding for the project came from the Migration Heritage Centre and NSW Government, Heritage Branch Department of Planning and Griffith City Council.
