Christopher Haworth: Strictly Plein Air

Strictly Plein Air is the seventh solo exhibition by artist Christopher Haworth, who is based at Tallimba in the Riverina, and his first solo exhibition at Griffith Regional Art Gallery.

En Plein Air painting (French for in the open air painting) describes the process of painting a landscape outdoors, and can also be used as a name for the resulting works.

Mr Haworth is a veteran of En Plein Air painting and has exhibited widely in the district and beyond in Griffith, Wagga Wagga, West Wylaong and Sydney.

This exhibition explores the history, important legacy and practice of en plein air painters such as the French impressionists but from the context of the contemporary Australian bush landscape surrounding this district. This engagement with the tradition of modern painting coupled with Christopher’s love of nature and is evident in his body of ‘Plein Air’ paintings, along with his concerns with climate change and pollution of the environment.
