CSU: What We Owe

The Charles Sturt University Art Collection exhibition includes historical linocut print work and framed poetry by First Nations activist, poet/printmaker, Kevin Gilbert.
Gilbert is a Wiradyuri artist and some of the lino plates printed were from  the artists prison floor. The exhibition also includes unique and editioned screenprinted work by Michelle Hamer commenting particularly on the medicalisation and imaging of female and other bodies, and environmental themed work by Sarah McConnell in the form of monotype prints; one on a very large scale of the forrest protests in Tasmania, and a series of smaller prints that form part of the BREAKING series of 57 monotypes based on articles released in the Guardian newspaper about extreme weather events.
The genesis of this exhibition and the title of the show is formed from a book entitled What We Owe Each Other: A New Social Contract For A Better Society by Minouche Shafik, published 27 April, 2021. Shafik is a British/Egyptian economist. The book describes how Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s 1762 documented idea of a social contract, or mutual dependency within differing layers of society is broken and an economic way to fix it. It made me think of what we owe to our children, what we owe the less advantaged in society, First Nations peoples, women, and the environment?
